by Manolis Priniotakis
ANC 3F05 Commissioner
Are you concerned about the school boundary issue and how it would impact the boundaries of Murch and Hearst, two public elementary schools within our ANC? Would you like a safe environment for children to walk to school? Would you like to know more about what UDC has to offer our community? These are issues the new Education Committee of ANC 3F will tackle.
At its February 19th meeting, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 3F voted to create an Education Committee – a novel structure for our ANC. (We also created an ad hoc Van Ness Visioning Committee, which you probably read about on Forest Hills Connection.) I was pleased to accept the nomination and election as the committee chair.
Committees, made up of residents within a particular ANC boundary, represent an approach many ANCs have long employed with great effectiveness. My goals for the committee include:
- raising the profile of education concerns;
- incorporating members of the community more closely into the work of the ANC;
- streamlining the work of the ANC by considering education issues in detail outside the sitting of the entire Commission;
- and providing recommendations for action.
We will work toward the development of a strong community of interest on education issues, with possible activities including an area schools resource guide, transportation planning best practices, and drafting possible resolutions on boundary, safety and other education-related topics. In addition, we will seek to enhance and improve – where necessary – the relationship between the community and university components located in ANC 3F.
Our community faces several education-related concerns – some acute and present, some more distant but no less difficult. In its first sitting, the Committee will establish its structure, membership and workplan. All meetings will be open to the public regardless of formal membership of the Committee.
If you are interested in participating in the ANC 3F Education Committee and a resident of ANC 3F, please contact me at [email protected]. The first meeting will occur in the coming weeks, with the date and location to be determined, in part based on the level of expressed interest.
