Step Afrika! The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence
Washington Performing Arts opens its 50th season with the debut of a new and expanded production of Step Afrika!’s signature work, The Migration, based on American painter Jacob Lawrence’s iconic series (displayed at the Phillips Collection and at MoMA in New York).
September 30-October 2, 2016: Step Afrika!, the acclaimed, DC-based, global ambassador for the tradition of step dance viscerally blends body percussion, dance, spoken word, projected images of Lawrence’s paintings, and live and recorded music to chart the story of African-American migrants moving from the South to the North in the early 1900s. The program features members of the Men and Women of the Gospel Choir. Purchase tickets – $45
