This Saturday’s Forest Hills Community Yard Sale is turning into a can’t-miss event. So far, more than 30 households have signed with yard sales at nine sites around the neighborhood. At 8 a.m. Saturday, October 17th, Forest Hills Connection will publish a list and map of the sites (or pick up printed maps at 30th and Albemarle when the yard sale begins), and then from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., it’s ready, set, shop!
The Forest Hills Community Yard Sale grew out of a suggestion by Marina Burmistrova, whose young son wanted a yard sale. I thought this was worth a try. Since I did not know a thing about yard sales, I turned to a couple of experts: Michael Sussman, who does the Georgetown Flea market, and Robin Rose, who used to be an antiques dealer. The response to our little experiment has been wonderful. And to my great relief, the weather appears to be cooperating and should be mostly sunny.
Some of the yard sales are individual efforts; some are multifamily. One site has been designated the community site where neighbors will set up tables to sell their wares.
Some of the items to be sold Saturday.Forest Hills Connection, a project of the Forest Hills Neighborhood Alliance, is asking for 10% of yard sale proceeds to support our operations. Our goal for the web site and newsletter, from the beginning, has been to give our community a forum, a place to share neighborhood news and knowledge. Be honest, what would you do without the Forest Hills Connection? Where else can you go to get the beat of the neighborhood?
