Fortunately, the fire turned out to be an outdoor fireplace a neighbor had mistaken for a burning house. But 6 to 8 inches of fresh snow and unplowed roads provided an alternative challenge. Five engines, two trucks and a squad car had responded to the call, as well as a hale and hearty team of about 25 firefighters. Several of the vehicles got stuck in the snow, and they were unable to budge until the DC Department of Public Works sent a plow, and another department sent a tow truck.
All ended well, and while we hope for plowed streets and fire trucks with snow tires next time, we’re grateful knowing that DC’s Fire Department is so responsive.
