Complaints about Flagship Carwash (4432 Connecticut Avenue) surface from time to time, mostly concerning vehicles blocking the sidewalk in front, the crosswalks on the southwest corner of Albemarle Street, and alley access on Albemarle. Then there’s the honking if a driver doesn’t realize the line stretches around the corner onto Albemarle, and tries to cut in.
ANC 3F commissioners have been getting an earful about the problems lately, and they’ve brought up the issues at a couple of recent meetings. And at their next meeting on Tuesday, July 15th, they’ll vote on a resolution calling on MPD, DDOT, and the mayor’s office to hold Flagship accountable.
It’s one of three resolutions the commissioners are scheduled to vote on at the Zoom meeting (see the draft agenda and the link to join the meeting below). Plus, Ward 3 Council member Matt Frumin will provide an update on the FY 2026 DC budget.
ANC 3F takes a break in August, so its meeting on Tuesday, July 15th is your last chance until September to bring up or learn about issues of neighborhood importance.

The resolution regarding the carwash is somewhat silly – while it is indeed annoying when cars in line for the carwash block the driveway or crosswalk, that seems to me to be the fault of the drivers who are not obeying traffic laws not the carwash. In fact, there are already signs in several places instructing drivers not to block the driveway or crosswalks. Further, it is as often the case that the problem is caused by Bread Furst customers racing into BF for a coffee and leaving their car for “just a minute” to avoid having to find parking on nearby side streets (a la the Mary Cheh fracas a few years ago). What are the owners of the carwash to do to enforce this resolution? Will similar resolutions be filed for all the FedEx and UPS trucks that routinely block lanes on Connecticut Avenue causing similar safety issues? Let’s save the ANC’s time for matters that are truly important, not those that are merely annoying,

I read the Flagship resolution. Lot’s of “WHEREAS….” clauses listing all of Flagship’s alleged infractions and shortcomings. The business has been a good neighbor for well over 80 years. Not sure why the ANC / FHC(?) decided now’s a good time to pass resolutions blaming Flagship for rude drivers. Bad idea.

It’s always a good time to ban the carwash. Idling, honking cars are useless nuisances. They are eyesores, noise polluters and air polluters. The carwash does nothing to control their customers. Also, the front driveway into the carwash from Connecticut Avenue is a threat to pedestrians.
The abandoned Burger King also poses a threat to pedestrians because idiots in cars and massive SUVs feel free to park on the sidewalk in front of the old Burger King where the canopy used to be. Stupid and dangerous.

I agree with Leslie Black. The situation at the carwash hasn’t changed in the 25 years I have been living here. The carwash has been here longer than all of us. There will always be lines of cars. If some of the drivers behave rudely, that’s a problem caused by the drivers, not by the carwash.

I disagree. There is a lot that Flagship can do. I have spoken to the manager and to the Transportation team in Matt Frumin’s office. As a result,, a sign was placed in the driveway advising drivers not to block the sidewalk. However,, at the same time, Flagship staff will approach drivers blocking the sidewalk to take their order. I have spoken to them too. But nothing changes. It is a constant issue. My husband is in a wheelchair and he cannot go around the cars blocking the sidewalk. Even worse, are the cars in line. They block the cut out at Albermarle so he is stuck in the middle of the street. The car wash is a major neighborhood hazard. I don’t know the solution but Matt Frumin or the Mayor’s office should have some possible solutions before someone gets injured on this dangerous block of Connecticut.

There are a couple of steps DOT could take to improve the situation
1. On Albemarle Paint DON’T BLOCK THE BOX cross lines in front of the alley way and drive way to 4444 Connecticut .
2. Forbid parking on the North side of Albemarle from Connecticut Ave to just west of the alley creating a passage past cars waiting in the line.Admittedly this would eliminate 3 or 4 parking spaces, Howver the restriction could be only be from 9:30 am to 630 PM allowing over night parking
