ANC 3F: July 9th Meeting

August 3, 2012

Portions of these notes originally appeared in the July 18 issue of The Northwest Current.

  • Commissioner Bob Summersgill reported that the University of the District of Columbia has modified the names of some of its course listings after the neighborhood commission said last year they were not in compliance with the Human Rights Act.

  • Commissioner Bob Summersgill reported that more than 30,000 people signed petitions in favor of placing a potential ban on corporate campaign contributions on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Portions of Brandywine Street are missing sidewalks.

  • Resident Max Hirshfeld said the city should install four-way stop signs at 31st and Brandywine streets. The D.C. Department of Transportation has previously determined there isn’t a justifiable need for a four-way stop at that intersection based on engineering guidelines.

Commissioner Tom Whitley proposed requesting that the city add sidewalks to the north side of Brandywine Street between 30th and 32nd streets.

Two residents said the loss of parking and the requirement to clear snow from the sidewalks made the plan impractical. The commission did not vote on the concept.

Commissioners voted 5-0, with Roman Jankowski and Cathy Wiss absent, to write a letter to the D.C. Department of Transportation requesting a traffic study of the neighborhood from Brandywine to Davenport streets.

  • Commissioners split 2-2 (meaning it did not pass) on a motion to grant $400 to a Boy Scout who plans to carry out repairs to the Melvin Hazen Trail in Rock Creek Park. Adam Tope and Tom Whitley supported the grant, Karen Beiley and Karen Perry opposed it, and Bob Summersgill recused himself.

Opponents said the commission can provide grant money only to certified nonprofits, not to individuals, and that no nonprofit had been willing to accept the money on the Scout’s behalf. The money would buy supplies for the project.

  • Commissioner Adam Tope said he’s concerned about the height of planned new buildings at Hearst Elementary School, 3950 37th St. The commission will likely take a position on the plans this fall.
  • [divider_space]

  • Commissioner Bob Summersgill withdrew a resolution to request that a series of alleys paralleling Connecticut Avenue be designated as a bike route, after other commissioners questioned how safe that plan would be.
  • [divider_space]

  • Ward 3 D.C. Council member Mary Cheh discussed a bill she planned to introduce that would start moving more of the city’s power lines underground.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to ask the Public Service Commission to require Pepco to bury all of its power lines.
  • [divider_space]

  • Commissioners voted 5-0 to support a stipulated liquor license at Buck’s Fishing & Camping, 5031 Connecticut Ave. The commission has already signed a voluntary agreement with the establishment.

The next ANC 3F meeting will be Monday, August 13, 7:30 p.m. at Capital Memorial Church, 3150 Chesapeake Street, NW.

    1. Bob Summersgill says

UDC didn’t change the name of any courses. The change sought and made was in the language used to state the non-discrimination statement printed on the course catalog. The statement on the back cover now includes all protected classes of the D.C. Human Rights Act. I’m sorry for the confusion.
