In April last year, under questioning from Ward 3 Council member Matt Frumin, DDOT director Sharon Kershbaum revealed that bike lanes would be cut from the agency’s upper Connecticut Avenue safety improvement project. DDOT unveiled its new thinking at a June 24, 2024 public meeting, describing and showing preliminary renderings including:
- Reduction of vehicular travel lanes from six to four;
- Installation of protected left turn pockets, providing a protected crossing phase for pedestrians and minimizing left turn crashes;
- Upgrade of safety infrastructure at uncontrolled pedestrian crossings; and
- Addition of curb extensions to improve pedestrian safety and provide bus platforms.
By October 2024, when DDOT met with the project’s Community Advisory Committee, the plans had been further scaled back due to cuts in the fiscal 2025 budget. Left turn lanes were left out. Also gone: The four-lane Connecticut Avenue with curb extensions narrowing the roadway and 24-parking on both sides of the street. Still in at the time: a new traffic signal at Connecticut and Chesapeake Street. And that was the last we heard about the project, until ANC 3F released the agenda for its meeting on Tuesday, June 17th (see below). DDOT’s Ted Van Houten is scheduled to provide an update.
Also on the agenda: the latest on Canna Art’s application for a medical cannabis dispensary license, and a presentation by DC Department of Buildings Director Brian Hanlon on Mayor Bowser’s proposed fiscal 2026 budget.
