When we wrote about some of DDOT’s Connecticut Avenue traffic safety plans last month, we did not include the agency’s plans to move or remove some bus stops along the corridor.
Among other changes, DDOT wants to move the southbound Metrobus stop at Brandywine Street from the north end of the intersection to the south, in front of the Frontenac apartments. And it’s planning to remove the southbound bus stop on Chesapeake Street entirely.
ANC 3F is voting at its May 12 meeting on a resolution opposing the Chesapeake bus stop removal, in part because “relocating the stops would require students and other users to cross additional intersections, increasing exposure to turning vehicles….”
The Brandywine and Davenport Street bus stops are the closest alternatives.
In another resolution, about DDOT’s 300-foot boundary for its Safe Routes to School plan for Murch Elementary, ANC 3F notes that “survey respondents most frequently identified the intersection of Connecticut Avenue NW and Davenport Street NW as particularly unsafe for students.”
It is also outside of the boundary and is not addressed in the DDOT plan.

Amy Mayers says
Many Frontenac residents object to the proposed relocation of the bus stop in front of our building.
1. DDOT has provided no data or analysis that justifies the change.
A DDOT crash review and safety analysis of 15 Connecticut Ave. intersections from 2020 to 2024 doesn’t identify Brandywine St. as a problem intersection, and DDOT collected no crash data from the location. In fact, the Brandywine St. intersection is not mentioned at all in the crash analysis.
In fact, the few statistics DDOT does include on this page appear to argue against this Brandywine St. proposal.
2. DDOT ignores WMATA’s “Guidelines for the Design and Placement of Transit Stops.”
DDOT does not acknowledge or provide any analysis of the location circumstances determined by WMATA to be significant in locating bus stops.
3. DDOT has not yet determined whether it will be able to relocate the entrance zone in front of the Frontenac at 4550 Connecticut Ave.
Since the building has no driveway, mail and delivery drivers will have no clear place to park near the building, as there is no off-site parking, and the residential parking spaces on Brandywine St. are often taken.
This means delivery drivers will have no convenient place to park and will be forced to drag hand trucks loaded with packages a longer distance to deliver them to the building. And they very well may just double park in front of the building and block traffic. Also, there will be no place for residents to be dropped off or picked up by friends, family or Lyft/Uber/taxi drivers.
4. Since the Frontenac (4550 Connecticut Ave.) has no driveway, it is not set back from the street.
Its front steps lead directly to the sidewalk and the proposed new location of the bus stop will be directly in front of the building’s entrance.
Changing the bus stop location would lead to an increase in noise, bus fumes and people hanging out on the building’s steps and front stoop. Weather permitting, people already hang out at the bus stop across the street in front of 4545 Connecticut Ave., talking and playing music loudly, arguing, fighting, etc. And that stop isn’t even directly in front of the Brandywine’s entrance!
5. DDOT did minimal public outreach to gather comments on the change. The change was discussed at two ANC meetings, one a year ago and one last month.
Let’s be honest – no one pays much attention to the ANCs. The change wasn’t publicized on any of the neighborhood’s listservs, so none of us had heard of it until the last couple of weeks. That’s hardly enough time for thorough public review.
6. The proposed relocation of the stop contradicts guidelines set out by the Federal Transit Administration and American Public Transit Authority.
