August in the Neighborhood: Enjoy Hillwood ‘After Hours,’ Summer Restaurant Week, free square dance at Peirce Mill

Enjoy Hillwood after closing time on August 5. The inaugural After Hours event at the museum and gardens includes performances by jazz and Go-Go band The JoGo Project, lawn games, textile crafting, demonstrations, a chance to chat up a curator, and more.

See ice cream made the old-fashioned way. Peirce Mill’s annual demonstration returns on August 8, and when it’s done, the kids get free frozen treats.

Test your trivia skills at Hillwood. On August 13, round up three friends and dazzle the rest of the crowd with your history, art and pop-culture knowledge. This trivia night’s theme is inspired by the museum’s textiles exhibit.

August 24-30 is Summer Restaurant Week. Sfoglina Pasta House in Van Ness is one of the restaurants participating in the Metropolitan Washington Restaurants Association event.

Sfoglina’s next-door neighbor Malabar was not listed when we checked, but says diners can craft a $45 meal with one appetizer, one entree and one dessert from its Summer Restaurant Week menu.

Malabar is also offering the special more than two weeks early, on Aug. 7.

Clean up one park, learn to square dance in another. On August 29 at 10 a.m., Van Ness Main Street’s Good Clean Fun initiative is hosting a cleanup at Forest Hills Park. Then, from 7 to 10 p.m., head to Peirce Mill for a square dance led by the DC Square Dance Collective. Partners and know-how are optional.
