Sarah Pokempner, the Avalon’s outreach director tells us: On Sunday, April 28th, the Avalon Theatre will hold a benefit to celebrate two significant anniversaries in the theater’s history. The celebration will honor the 90th anniversary of the theater, which opened in February, 1923. The event will also recognize the 10th anniversary of the theater’s current incarnation as a nonprofit.
The program will include a reception at the Theatre at 5 p.m. followed at 6:30 p.m. by a screening and discussion of “Side by Side: The Science, Art and Impact of Digital Cinematography,” a documentary that includes interviews with famous directors such as Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and Christopher Nolan.
A post-screening discussion will be led by Ann Hornaday, film critic for The Washington Post. Local documentary filmmakers and 2013 Oscar winners for Best Documentary Short, Sean and Andrea Fine, will participate in the discussion along with Ed Arentz, Managing Director, Music Box Films.
Proceeds from the benefit will support the theater’s conversion to digital cinema projection. For further information, including how to purchase tickets or make a donation visit theavalon.org/2013benefit.
