BreadLine Founder’s Next Venture – Van Ness

July 24, 2013

Former home of W.C. & A.N. Miller. Future home of Mark Furstenberg's new bakery?

Former home of W.C. & A.N. Miller. Future home of Mark Furstenberg’s new bakery?

Since 2008, Mark Furstenberg has been looking for a location in DC for his “Bread Furst” concept bakery. Furstenberg is the founder of BreadLine and Marvelous Market and is a world-renowned baker.

In 2011, Furstenberg asked readers of DonRockwell.com, a leading online food community, for help. Commissioner Adam Tope recommended to Furstenberg that he look into the Van Ness/Forest Hills neighborhood since the area was underserved by bakeries and has large resident, student and commercial population that would make an excellent customer base for a bakery.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission reports that Furstenberg is in advanced discussions to lease 4434 Connecticut Avenue NW. The bakery concept will primarily offer baked goods and breads and will also offer seating for 48 patrons. The ANC is proactively working with the landlord and Furstenberg and hopes to welcome Bread Furst to the neighborhood in the near future.

ANC 3F will likely have a special meeting in order to approve longer hours for the parking lot. The meeting time, date, and place have not yet been set.

ANC 3F will be holding a Special Meeting this Friday, July 26, 2013 at 6 PM. The Special Meeting will be held in the conference room at the Methodist Home at Fessenden and Connecticut Ave. NW. The meeting will also be live streamed on the internet at http://livestream.anc3f.us

The topic to be discussed at the Special Meeting is a resolution to make a modification to the Board of Zoning Adjustment Order #18496.

Pursuant to that order, BZA granted a special exception to the owners of 4434 Connecticut Ave NW to run an accessory parking lot in the rear of that property. Under the order, the hours of operation for the accessory parking lot are from 8 AM to 9 PM.

In light of recent developments at the property which require immediate attention from the ANC, the ANC has good cause to hold a meeting on less than 7 days notice. At the meeting on Friday, the ANC will offer a resolution to support extending the hours of operation of the parking from 6 AM – 11 PM. There will be no other modifications to the order.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

    Thanks

    Adam

The resolution has the support of this neighbor. 4434 Conn. is practically next door to me. I don’t see traffic getting any worse on Albemarle than it is already due to the car wash. I’m willing to bet that most of Bread Furst’s customers will be from the neighborhood, and on foot.

That’s a tough location, in line with the car wash and BK, but we will FLOCK there to support it. Congratulations ANC and FH Connection. I feel the combination of proactivity and reportage is really cranking now to the great benefit of our neighborhood.

This is very exciting! I promise to spend a significant fraction of my disposable income there.
