They do say to write what you know…: And author Susan Coll knows bookstores. She worked at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut) from 2011 to 2016, and rejoined the store as an events advisor last spring. Coll was a published novelist when she joined the team, and she told Washingtonian that she had promised the owners that “she wouldn’t write some kind of comic behind-the-scenes account of the beloved Connecticut Avenue shop.” Well, guess what? Bookish People, a fictionalized comic behind-the-scenes account of a DC book shop, is in stores now.
Save the date(s) for Art All Night: Since it began in Shaw in 2011, Art All Night has grown to include 20 neighborhoods and Main Street programs. And as you can see in the ads above and below, two of our area Main Streets are busy preparing for two nights of music and dance performances, film, art, and fun.
Van Ness Main Street is celebrating Art All Night on Friday, September 23rd, and Tenleytown Main Street’s event is on Saturday, September 24th. They’ve been lining up performers and exhibitors. They are also seeking volunteers and sponsors who can help make their upper Wisconsin and Connecticut Avenue commercial areas come alive.
Keep an eye on the Van Ness Main Street and Tenleytown Main Street websites and social media accounts for updates. We’ll keep you posted, too.
(Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street)
And pizza makes three: I’m Eddie Cano (5014 Connecticut Avenue) is now one of a trio of restaurants from founders Massimo and Carolyn Papetti, following the recent openings of Italian Bar two doors down at 5008 Connecticut and the Roman-style pizzeria In Bocca al Lupo at 2400 Wisconsin. The restaurant group also has a new corporate chef overseeing all three teams. Francesco Pescatore, they write, “hails from Calabria, Italy and has a rich and diversified resume spanning time at the helms of kitchens from Abu Dhabi to London to the U.S.”
Three square meals at Flavor Garden: The restaurant and bar serving American comfort food at 4400 Connecticut Avenue is now serving breakfast, too, Tuesday through Sunday starting at 8 a.m. Breakfast offerings include egg sandwiches and omelets. Also new at Flavor Garden: online ordering and deliver through Clover.com.
More reasons to brunch: The Sfoglina Pasta House at 4445 Connecticut is the only one that serves brunch. And the restaurant will be adding new entrees and sweets to its brunch menu as of September 10th. “Feel free to start dreaming about it now…” Sfoglina says.
In appreciation:
One thing that sets us apart from other #liquor stores in DC is that we have a #free parking lot! You can trust that your car will be safe under the watchful eyes of our beloved parking attendant, Al!
