At 7 a.m. last Friday, a new Call Your Mother deli opened at 5035 Connecticut Avenue.
On Saturday, the crowds descended.
Customers were not waiting long. An employee periodically came out from behind the counter to take orders from those waiting in line. We soon collected our bagels and headed out the back entrance.
This location’s staff includes some familiar faces from Little Red Fox, which closed its bakery and cafe at 5035 Connecticut in late December.
Much love to our LRF cooks Fanny, Keyla, Mari, Ana, and Yesenia. ❤️ The absolute best people! So happy they are being taken care of at CYM. https://t.co/BCPP1p8eP7

Days Inn is being renovated, inside and out. There have been some signs of work at the hotel at 4400 Connecticut Avenue. For example, the awning has been removed from the front entrance.
Jamie Howser, the regional director of operations at Coakley Williams Hotel Management confirms that work is under way.
We are in the final phase of signage and some exterior repair/general maintenance cleanup. It should look great when we are complete.
Inside we will be focusing on all guest aspects from rooms to public areas. We have a lot of moving parts happening right now and we are beyond excited to see these changes being made not only for the guests, but the community and staff. We are currently waiting for our “test room” of furniture to come in to see if the fitment is correct and created the proper flow for the guest experience and quality before we fully commit to moving forward but feel very confident that it will be a win for all.
We will also be addressing some items in the restaurant [Flavor Garden] such as the ceiling, artwork, signage, etc. to help [owner Deirdre Holliday-Williams] out….
Howser added that the hotel will begin renting around 50 parking spots late this month, should anyone in the community need one.
We asked Howser if the renovations mean that the property has been taken off the market. We have not received a response.

Shemali’s Van Ness has been open for a year.
It’s been just over a year since Shemali’s expanded from their New Mexico Avenue base and opened at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Albemarle Street. #ShemalisDC #LebaneseMarketDC #VanNess pic.twitter.com/jbkDSC0zUV

No fanfare here. But in recent weeks, Shemali’s has announced the addition of carryout and delivery ordering, and a new homemade “dish of the day,” including beef stew on Mondays, and kafta and potatoes on Thursdays. Those specials and items from Shemali’s grocery selection can also be ordered ahead online.

Earlier reports indicated that the Days Inn would be converted to residential housing. Now from what I read, it appears that the hotel will remain as such under new ownership/management and with many needed upgrades, improvements and enhancements. Will be so glad if this is the case. We have enough apartment buildings up and down the Connecticut Avenue corridor. We need a lovely neighborhood hotel for our guests. I used to put my guests in the Days Inn, but stopped doing this as the hotel steadily deteriorated in multiple ways. So look forward to further updates on the building.
