Correction: The original article incorrectly stated that Italian Bar is owned by Da Noi Hospitality. While it is a sister business of I’m Eddie Cano, Italian Bar is not part of Da Noi Hospitality LLC or the bankruptcy filing. We apologize for the error.
Chapter 11 for Da Noi Hospitality: Which is better known as the owner of I’m Eddie Cano (5014 Connecticut). The Washington Business Journal reports Da Noi’s September bankruptcy filing came after its landlord sued in July “for nearly $160,000 in unpaid rent from March 2024 to June 2025.”
Says WBJ: “I’m Eddie Cano is one of a growing number of D.C.-area restaurants struggling to make rent payments amid a confluence of challenges, including rising labor costs, faltering consumer confidence, and declining sales.”
Let’s be frank: Hot dogs are hot now, according to The Washington Post. That’s good news for Dog Haus, which continues the buildout of its Van Ness hot dog joint and biergarten at 4340 Connecticut Avenue. But hot dogs are already being served a few blocks to the north, at Comet Ping Pong (5037 Connecticut).
The Haut Dog joined the Comet menu earlier this year.
Putting young nursing trainees to work: “A new high school training program aims to credential certified nurse assistants even before graduation and roll them directly into paid apprenticeships with ready-and-willing nursing home employers.” The first employers in the program include Forest Hills of DC (4901 Connecticut), according to McKnight’s Long-Term Care News.
A small business collaboration: Washington Photo Safari and Tikka (4221B Connecticut) are teaming up for a food photography class on Saturday, October 25th. The two-hour session will “show you how to get the best food pictures with your camera or phone.”
And now for some food writing: Mark Furstenberg, the founder of Bread Furst, has more than one creative outlet. There’s the baking, of course. And there’s the writing. Furstenberg started blogging at BreadFurst.com months before the bakery opened in 2014, and now he’s blogging on Substack. One recent post explains the cookbooks showing up in the bakery’s little library. In another, Furstenberg reminisces about his life and work in the neighborhood starting in 1962.
An ice cream and wine pairing: Bethesda Magazine wrote about the wine bar and ice cream shop mashup that is Honeys & Friends (5027 Connecticut).
A sidewalk cafe returns: Dining out at Muchas Gracias (5029 Connecticut) once again means dining outside the restaurant’s front door. The sidewalk cafe disappeared over the summer while Muchas Gracias renewed its public space permit.
Trick-or-treating and spooky pets at local businesses: Van Ness Main Street is hosting three Halloween-themed events on Sunday, October 26th. Up first is the annual Spooktacular at Forest Hills Park, with kid-friendly activities. That will be followed by trick-or-treating at participating businesses along Connecticut Avenue. And later on, pets and their humans are encouraged to dress up for a Spooky Pets costume contest at Calvert Woodley (4339 Connecticut). You’ll find more details and registration links here.
Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street.
