Kickstart a comic (cook)book: Mourning the loss of Little Red Fox? Three months after the Forest Hills bakery and cafe closed, LRF founders and comic book enthusiasts Matt and Jena Carr have announced they are writing a cookbook featuring favorites from the menu and comic strips about the foodservice life. And let’s just say… their former customers are hungry for it.
Their Kickstarter launched just before midnight Monday, March 20th, with a $15,000 fundraising goal. Within the first 24 hours, they exceeded their goal by around $10,000.
This means that we will 100% for sure be making this Little Red Fox cookbook!!!
A massive thank you to everyone who came out swinging to support us today. We couldn’t do this without you!

Within 48 hours, they had more than $30,000 in pledges.
Backers who pledge $20 get a PDF copy of the cookbook. At $30 dollars, that cookbook is a printed copy. Rewards at higher pledge amounts include bottles of LRF’s popular hot sauce (which is also in the recipe book), coffee mugs, and for $500, a custom comic strip character. A pledge at the $1,000 level allows you to consult with Matt Carr about starting a foodservice business.
Want your own cookbook and some of that Little Red Fox swag? The fundraiser is open through April 19th. The Carrs plan to test the recipes, write and draw the comic strips, and publish and ship Foxes at Work by Thanksgiving.
Coffee before books: The Den coffeeshop at Politics and Prose is opening earlier on weekdays now – a full hour earlier than the bookstore. Its hours Monday through Friday are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturdays, the Den is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sundays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Eau de Hillwood: Hillwood Museum now has its own signature fragrance. Called “Cocktails at Eight,” the eau de parfum was inspired by the estate’s spring gardens, and Marjorie Merriweather Post’s “legendary” dinner parties. The $175 perfume is available at the Hillwood Museum store online and in the museum. Hillwood is also planning to release a fall-inspired perfume with its partner, Molly Ray Parfums.
Recent openings: SakuSaku Flakerie, a bakery that has gained a following as a pop-up at the former Al Volo in Cleveland Park, now has its own storefront in Tenleytown. Chevy Chase is now home to “DC’s Most Adventurous Record Store.” And six months after Opal brought East and West Coast-inspired food to Chevy Chase, the restaurant has been added to the Michelin Guide.
Save the Uptown: DCist reports on a group of neighbors seeking to “reopen the iconic Uptown Theater as a nonprofit venue that combines arthouse film screenings, dining, and space for events.”
Movie Night in the Park 3 – Return of Movie Night in the Park: UDC and Van Ness Main Street are teaming up for another sequel of the free movie series that launched in 2021. The schedule:
June 21: Back to the Future
June 28: Sister Act
July 19: 101 Dalmations (1996)
July 26: Minions: The Rise of Gru
Ticket reservations will go live in April.
Good for what ails you: Mark Furstenberg may not have had hangover cures in mind when he founded Bread Furst in 2014, but Washingtonian magazine has placed one of the bakery’s breakfast sandwiches in this category anyway. The nova lox bagel is one of eight sandwiches on the list of “Hangover-Curing Breakfast Sandwiches You Can Order From Your Bed.” Another is the Sun City From Call Your Mother.

At the former Burger King, the graffiti has since been cleaned up, but local photographer Diane Krauthamer captured this moment in time:
