Van Ness now has a second full-service grocery store.
MOM’s Organic Market opened its Van Ness location on Friday, April 6th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening specials that lasted through the weekend.
Like the Giant Food across the street, the store is easily accessible via Metro and bus. The underground parking off Windom Place appears easy to navigate too.
Shoppers who drive can take the stairs or elevators to the main floor.
The bathrooms require a code. Someone punched it in for me.
In the store, I wandered the aisles…
… and discovered some items that I’ve never seen at Giant or Whole Foods, including these Vietnamese Spiced Pickled Vegetables.
I also found smoked turkey drumsticks in the fresh meat case, which I used to be able to get at the Fresh Fields (now Whole Foods) in Tenleytown. And of interest to me: the gluten-free section in the dry goods aisle, across from gluten-free and alcohol-free beer.
The Whale Tea also opened its doors late last week.
Customers so far can order via kiosk or the web at thewhaleteadc.com. (We tried out the app but the closest store it would recognize is in Williamsburg, Virginia, and it would not let us change the location.)
Yet another early April opening: a vintage decor popup. Bold Alley is popping up at Canna Art (5008 Connecticut Avenue) through June 6th. Its owners tell us the shop features “a mix of vintage and modern home goods, iconic mid-century pieces, and one-of-a-kind decor.”
Rosedale is ready for spring. But is spring ready for Rosedale? Its outdoor seating appeared on Sunday (at 4465 Connecticut), ahead of weather we’d describe as inhospitable to al fresco dining. But patio weather will be here before we know it!
A spring metamorphosis for Honeys? Honeys & Friends (5027 Connecticut) hasn’t been serving ice cream for a while, and those who peek inside will find that it has been transformed into a wine bar. We’re told the name, and opening date, are TBD.
They’re busy bees at Van Ness Main Street. So busy, in fact, that we’ve done two updates recently (here and here) on their activities, and they’ve added even more spring events. New to the list are a springtime art contest (April 15-30), a Forest Hills Park cleanup (April 19 at 10 a.m.) in partnership with Mayor Bowser’s Office of the Clean City, and pollinator garden walks with Master Gardener Kathy Sykes (May 3, 4 and 14). The tickets for the walks are $15 for one person, and $25 for two, and benefit the Connecticut Avenue planting efforts.

I bought spiced pickled veggies at Giant last week, just FYI. They were near mushrooms and other fresh produce.,
