Hear the amazing story of a Jewish baseball sensation and support a local documentary filmmaker on Thursday, April 4th at the DCJCC.
We welcomed Aviva Kempner to the Forest Hills neighborhood almost two years ago. One of her most famous films is “The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg.”
The MLB Hall of Famer played for the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1930s and 40s. He was also Jewish, and Aviva’s 1998 award-winning documentary features some famous fans who talk about how he transformed the way non-Jews viewed Jews, and the way Jews saw themselves.
At next Thursday’s Authors Out Loud event at the DCJCC, Aviva will screen extras from the 2013 DVD re-release, which includes a phone interview with Ted Williams, more fun fan stories from Senator Carl Levin, Alan Dershowitz, and Walter Matthau, and a new interview with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The event will also feature John Rosengren, the author of “Hank Greenberg: Hero of Heroes,” and Kevin Blackistone, ESPN panelist, sports columnist and visiting professor at the University of Maryland’s Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism.
