A DDOT project under way through August 30th is adding the first sidewalks to one side of the 2900-3000 blocks of Davenport Street and nearby segments of Linnean Avenue and 30th Street. DDOT’s Karyn McAlister shared this map of the work area:
There have never been sidewalks on either side of these street segments.

This sidewalk gap on Davenport extends one and one half blocks. There is no sidewalk on the other side of the street. (Google Street View image)
DDOT’s work checks off more items on ANC 3F’s pedestrian safety wishlist. For several years, the ANC has been pressing the District to fill these and other sidewalk gaps in the neighborhood. Commissioners Mitch Baer and Courtney Carlson, and Paul Harrison, the current chair of the ANC’s Streets and Sidewalks Committee committee, have been the latest to press DDOT to complete the sidewalk network and create safer walking routes.
DDOT recently completed the first sidewalk on a one-block stretch of 35th Street between Alton Place and Yuma.

long long overdue. Thank you very much to ANC3F for staying on DDOT’s back to get this done.

On Sunday, August 24, DDOT’s work on new sidewalks in this area was finished only for the short stretch on the west side of Linnean going uphill (north) from Davenport. But that was a critical connection to protect walkers from walking in traffic coming downhill (south) on Linnean.
Meanwhile, on Davenport, the gap on the south side going west up the hill to 30th was half done. There was a large frame for the concrete cistern for the future rain garden under the second half of that gap, but no new sidewalk yet. That gap was fully excavated.
Similarly, the gap on the south side of Davenport from 30th going west up the hill to 32nd was excavated with another frame for another rain garden in place but no new sidewalk. At the rate DDOT is filling these sidewalk gaps, DDOT should be able to finish the gaps on Davenport by Friday, August 30.
