Conflicting accounts on cause of May 24 Connecticut Ave. crash and overturned vehicle

May 29, 2018 by FHC

A few of our readers have asked about the crash on the 4400 block of Connecticut Avenue on Thursday, May 24th. It involved three vehicles, and one rolled over onto its roof.

Remarkably, no one suffered life-threatening injuries. The two boys in the back seat of the overturned Honda Civic were taken by ambulance to Sibley and Washington Hospital Center, treated, and released.

The police report says the crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Connecticut Avenue.

Diagram from the police report.

Officer Kevin Deloziers took statements from the three drivers:

  • The driver of vehicle 1 (the overturned Honda) said she was driving southbound when the driver of Vehicle 2 pulled into her lane. She changed lanes quickly in response, causing her to overcorrect and roll the car.
  • The driver of Vehicle 2 says Vehicle 1 came into his lane, striking his car, and then Vehicle 1 lost control and rolled over.
  • Vehicle 3 was parked. The driver did not see the incident but felt Vehicle 2 strike her car.
  •

It’s not clear whether the reversible lane was a factor.

The crash is still under investigation in part because of the conflicting statements. Also, witnesses were not on hand to give their statements to MPD officers at the scene. And investigators have 53 of their own photos to analyze, as well as possible video from Flagship Car Wash at 4432 Connecticut.

Am I reading this incorrectly? One person said Vehicle 1 rolled over, the other person said Vehicle 2 rolled over. Why would it be unclear which car rolled over?

THANK YOU. That was an unfortunate error/typo on our part. The Vehicle 2 driver’s description is now fixed.
