DC leaf collection has begun. Someone tell the trees?

November 8, 2018

Davenport Street, Nov. 3, 2018. Friday’s rain and Saturday’s wind knocked many of the leaves off of these trees.

“Ready to rake, DC?” asks DPW’s 2018 leaf collection brochure. Someone needs to ask the trees. Some are giving up their leaves, but for the most part they are showing us their brilliant fall colors.

Ready or not, the District began its first round of leaf collection this week. Homeowners who got the brochure in the mail know to rake what leaves they have into the curbside tree boxes (not the street) on the Sunday before the DPW crews come to collect.

Other important dates: The second round of leaf collection begins December 10th. Holiday trees and greenery will be picked up from January 14th through February 2nd.

Why pick up the leaves? To protect the Chesapeake watershed.

Where do they end up? The District takes the leaves for composting. You could hang onto your leaves and do the same.

  1. Hermine and the residents of the block says

    November 19, 2018 at 9:56 am

Last year they got it right with end of cycle pick-up. This year it is way too early for the 2800. block of Davenport St. Plus they only made one pass which is not enough for our tree laden block. Hence the. street, sidewalk and driveways are covered already and were a few hours after the collection. We do not have tree boxes and a narrow pathetic “walkway”. so there is no place to collect leaves.
