Artists wanted! The DC Department of General Services is putting the call out to individual artists and teams for public artworks to be installed at the renovated Murch Elementary.
The detailed Request for Qualifications seeks artists to design nine artworks to be installed indoors and out.
The works must be able to withstand the elements (if outdoors) and “very active children” – for 50 years. The budget – including installation – is $150,000. The application deadline is December 31st. In the seven months two follow, DGS and partners will select semi-finalists and finalists, and the schedule calls for the works to be installed by the end of July 2018. The school renovation and addition are scheduled for completion in August of next year.
Meanwhile, the playground for the pre-K and Kindergartners is currently being fabricated. The design inspiration comes from nearby Soapstone Valley. “The children will enjoy the sense of climbing into a treehouse, crossing a stream, and playing on the logs and boulders of the local stream valley,” says the update on the Murch website.
