The first Forest Hills Park cleanup of 2026 took place last weekend. One volunteer reported picking up more than 50 cigarette butts (though smoking is illegal in DC parks). Another took care of an even more disgusting problem.
More from the neighbors keeping up with the park’s upkeep:
Van Ness Main Street’s Good Clean Fun initiative organized a successful cleanup of Forest Hills Park and Playground on Saturday. Volunteers ranged in age from four to sixty-four.
Mayoral candidate Gary Goodweather stopped by and took on one of the most pungent jobs: cleaning out dog waste bags that don’t make it into the trash can and are left behind to marinate in the cage.

More cleanups are planned in June, July, August and October. All ages and abilities are welcome, though kids younger than high school age should let a grownup tag along. You’ll find additional details and the signup link here.
Forest Hills Connection is another program of Van Ness Main Street. We maintain our editorial independence.

What actions can we take to prevent cigarette and marijuana smoking in the park?
I do often see groups of people sitting on the benches smoking, in a flagrant violation of the rules. It is infuriating.

This is a good question for MPD leaders. They will be hosting a meeting in Forest Hills Park on May 5 at 5:00 pm. Everyone in the community is welcome.
