Farmers Market Update: Radishes and Rhythm

June 8, 2012

Photos by Marlene Berlin

The farmers market at the UDC plaza has lost its original home to the construction of UDC’s new student center. But it is still opening tomorrow (Saturday, June 9th) for its fourth season. Signs will point the way to its location on the UDC campus. The market’s hours will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturdays through November 10th.

Judging from the crowds at the New Morning Farm market last Saturday, most neighbors know that it’s back at Sheridan school for the summer season and beyond. The market resumed Saturday operations on May 26th and returned to its Tuesday schedule on the 29th. The Saturday market is open from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. through the fall and winter, and on Tuesdays, it’s open 4-8 p.m. through the end of September.

On their second Saturday back at New Morning Farm market, customers shopped to a beat. The rhythm section was provided by a drummers group practicing a few blocks away at Alice Deal Middle School.

The Batala women’s percussion ensemble is free to women of all ages and backgrounds, and performs at parades and festivals. The group will no longer serenade our neighborhood each Saturday, however. Batala’s weekly rehearsal moves to the Lab School on Reservoir Road starting tomorrow.

Here’s a video of Batala in action in Farragut Square, 2010.
