Adding new rain garden cleanup and board meeting dates and details below. And the concert was fantastic.
Has Forest Hills Park (at 3200 Chesapeake Street NW) ever had this much going on in one month?
Saturday, September 7th, 5 to 7 p.m.: A concert at the park’s amphitheater near the Brandywine Street entrance. Progressive hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, a Grammy Award nominee, is the headliner. (More on Christylez and sponsors here.) Armand’s Pizza will be there too, and will donate 20 percent of its sales to Forest Hills Park if at least two volunteers sign up for each of the four 30-minute shifts.
Then, on Monday, September 16th, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Friends of Forest Hills Playground will hold a board and community meeting at 4600 Connecticut Avenue. (RSVP: [email protected]) The agenda includes electing new officers and planning the park’s annual Halloween party. The current officers put out the call last spring for new board members and leadership, else they will wind down the organization.
And on Saturday, September 21st: The first of two work sessions at the rain garden/stormwater retention area next to the park’s amphitheater.
“Hello! We’re Olivia and Kareena. We are two Girl Scouts who are working on our Silver Award. Our project is to restore a rain garden in Forest Hills Park, NW DC. We would like to invite you to help us weed and plant! We will be removing all overgrowth and invasive plants and replacing them with a variety of colorful, flowering native plants!”
Olivia and Kareena at the September 7th concert at Forest Hills Park. Donations collected at the concert are going toward their project.
The weeding day is September 21st and is split into two sessions: 9 to 11 a.m. and 10:30 to 1 p.m. The planting day is Saturday, October 12th, and Olivia and Kareena need volunteers from the community on both days. As part of the project, they are also teaching us how to care properly for the new, improved rain garden. Sign up here.
