The Halloween “Spooktacular” at Forest Hills Playground, a neighborhood tradition for decades, is coming back this year with more activities for kids – and new hosts.
The event’s longtime organizer, Friends of Forest Hills Playground, became a program of Van Ness Main Street earlier this year. The two partners are throwing the comeback party.
“I’ve been dying to bring this event back ever since we had to lay it to rest in 2020,” said Erin Bryan, the last president of the Friends of Forest Hills Playground board. Bryan is now a member of the Van Ness Main Street board as a playground liaison. She told Forest Hills Connection that the Spooktacular, under the group’s partnership with VNMS, will be “bigger, better, and spookier than ever.”
“But not too spooky,” Bryan said. “Only friendly ghosts and silly spiders will be out for this all-ages, family-friendly event.”
The free event begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 30th. It includes pumpkin and trick-or-treat bag crafts, spooky story time and a magic show. Then, from noon to 3 p.m., costumed kiddos are invited to go trick-or-treating at participating businesses along Connecticut Avenue. You’ll find a more detailed description of the activities and the playground’s location at this link. You can also register for the event to be notified of updates.
Forest Hills Connection is also a program of Van Ness Main Street.
