Green on the Red Line

October 14, 2015

We’ll admit it: We kind of like the plants growing in the light boxes next to the tunnel walls at the Van Ness Metro station and its neighbors on the Red Line. They provide a nice contrast to the gray concrete chamber.

Plant life will find a way. #Metro #VanNess #WashingtonDC @wmata

Turns out, they’re Venus Maidenhair Ferns, or at least, that’s what a University of Maryland professor thinks they are – without taking a closer look with a microscope. WAMU’s Metro Connection talked to Professor Andy Baldwin for last week’s show.

But where there’s plant life, there’s water, and water and Metro don’t get along very well. WAMU gets into that angle as well.

Thanks TenleytownDC for spotting the story!
