How can we help one other? Please share your ideas, links and resources

We’ve talked about checking in on your elderly neighbors, and about ways to support local businesses. What else have you discovered as we feel our way through this unprecedented crisis?

We’ll start: Coronavirus.DC.gov is a comprehensive guide to the DC services that are – and aren’t – available at this time.

Forest Hills Connection is produced by volunteers, and supported by you. We appreciate your support – financial and otherwise. Here’s how to donate.

Council member Mary Cheh pointed out in a constituent email that none of the sites providing grab-and-go meals for students are in Ward 3, but there are many families in the ward in need of assistance. She is asking that families who are eligible for the “Free and Reduced Meals” program email Cheh’s Legislative Director, Michael Porcello at mporcello@dccouncil.us, or call her office at (202)724-8062 with the following information::

    – If you would be interested in a Ward 3 meal distribution site.
    – A general sense of where you live in Ward 3 (such as an address, neighborhood, or intersection). (“This will help us determine if there is a critical mass and what central location would be ideal for a potential site.”)

“I will present these answers to the City Administrator for his evaluation and will keep the community updated on his response,” Cheh said in the email.

It looks like this post can be updated with some good news. The list of sites providing meals for students has been expanded. Starting March 25, meals will be available at Wilson High School.

Forest Hills Friends and Neighbors: :Here is a wonderful way to connect with our neighbors in Ward 8! When you’re at the store in the next few days, could you pick up some extra groceries for the terrific girls of Excel Academy? Details below, and I would be happy to assist with delivery. Thanks so much and best wishes for your health and safety! Warmly, Mary Beth, President, MBR Coaching + Consulting for Growth, LLC

Georgetown Presbyterian Church has been working with Excel Academy, an all-girls public school in Ward 8, to make sure its families have access to food while many are facing challenges with employment. We’re collecting bags of groceries at the church and delivering. The next delivery will be Monday morning at 8 a.m. To get full details, including preferred items and dropoff information, go to gtownpres.org/coronavirusserve

In our building, the Brandywine Apartments, our tenant association has started up an email link program called “Brandywine Cares: Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” in which we pair younger residents who are willing to run errands with older residents who cannot get out but need to get groceries, meals , and supplies. It is run by a volunteer coordinator
