It’s easy to shop small and local on Small Business Saturday

November 21, 2016

Want to avoid the Black Friday crowds? Shop Small Business Saturday instead.

Our options keep expanding. Little Red Fox, Bread Furst and Soapstone Market have opened their doors in the four years since Forest Hills Connection editor-in-chief Marlene Berlin first compiled this walking and shopping tour of Forest Hills, Cleveland Park, Chevy Chase and Tenleytown.

And this year, for the first time, Van Ness and Tenleytown businesses are participating in Small Business Saturday events. Van Ness Main Street Executive Director Theresa Cameron sent us an update on the plans for businesses along Connecticut between Van Ness and Albemarle Streets, and offered a few ideas for treating your loved ones – and yourselves.

Join Van Ness Main Street for Shop Small (and local) Business Saturday, November 26. This is the first time that Van Ness has hosted a Small Business Saturday.

This is the perfect opportunity to put together your holiday gift basket. Check out hand-crafted, local foods at Bread Furst, and get that someone special local chocolates at Soapstone Market. Calvert Woodley has the perfect gifts for the mixologist in your life.

Get ready for a holiday event by getting your nails done at Nail Avenue, your hair trimmed at Tony’s or Cut N Edge, or a new hairdo at Ernesto’s.

Cap your day off at one of our international restaurants like Laliguras Nepalese Bistro or Thai Pad.

What is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It began in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is a registered trademark of American Express corporation.

Look for the logo at Van Ness restaurants and shops on Saturday, November 26. There will be free giveaways and specials. And also remember that November 26 is the last day of the UDC farmers market in Van Ness.

Tenleytown Main Street’s Small Business Saturday event is on the second day of Tenleytown’s annual Winterfest. From Friday, November 25 through Saturday, December 3, local businesses will offer specials and discounts.
