June in the Neighborhood: Create by the Creek, celebrate 40 years of Politics and Prose, take a rosé tour, and watch movies under the stars

Create art, and shop and support local creatives. Peirce Mill has been inspiring artists for 200 years. On June 22nd, you’re invited to join the tradition. Create by the Creek, Friends of Peirce Mill’s annual celebration of art and community, includes free artist-led workshops and art supplies for those who want to do their own creek-side creating.

Local artists and artisans will be selling their wares on June 8th at Van Ness Main Street’s Second Saturdays pop-up market and book sale. And starting with an opening reception on June 14th, as you may have read here, the VNMS office at 4340 Connecticut becomes a pop-up art gallery for Arletha Greer, an artist exploring and challenging the lines between folk and fine art, and a new graduate of UDC’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Explore the ocean through art. Fragile Beauty: Art of the Ocean, opening June 8th at Hillwood Museum, features ocean-inspired works from Marjorie Merriweather Post’s own collection and contemporary pieces on loan.

Celebrate 40 years of Politics and Prose. On June 22nd, the Politics and Prose plans all-day activities in the kids and teens department, as well as a panel discussion on bookselling in the past, present and future. P&P is also inviting people to share their favorite memories of the store, and with your permission, might even quote you during the festivities!

Travel the world of rosé. Calvert Woodley is hosting a walk-around wine tasting at the UDC Student Center on June 20th, featuring 35 rosé wines from around the world, plus rosé beer, cider, and cocktails.

Watch movies under the stars. We’re not sure what’s more fabulous about Hillwood’s Divas Outdoors movie nights: The films (Mamma Mia on June 13th) or the picnic. Compete to win a free year-long Hillwood membership by dressing as the characters and styling your spread (flameless candelabras encouraged).

On June 26th, pink will be in vogue. Van Ness Main Street and UDC’s first free Movie Night in the Park of the season is The Barbie Movie. Find details and register here.

Additional June events from our community calendar:

  • African American history hikes
  • Rock Creek planetarium open houses
  • See the gristmill at Peirce Mill in action
  • Tanabata, the Japanese star festival, at Hillwood

Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street.
