As they have done for the past 12 years, volunteers will spend the Martin Luther King holiday weekend sprucing up Rock Creek Park and its tributaries. Rock Creek Conservancy and the National Park Service are hosting nearly a dozen trash and invasive species removal events on Saturday, January 14th and Monday, January 16th.
Nearby cleanups include the conservancy’s “mini-oasis” at Trail 9. The mini-oases are restoration and demonstration projects that involve removing invasive species and returning native plants to the ecosystem.
The Reservation 630 (formerly Melvin Hazen) mini-oases east and west of Connecticut Avenue will get some care on both days.
Online registration is required, and if these events fill up, there are more on the Rock Creek Conservancy calendar. The conservancy also encourages property owners to sign its “free a tree” pledge to remove invasive English ivy, at any time and on any day. You can even enlist students in need of service hours.
