On May 4th and 11th, we get to do some globetrotting… minus the packing, the line at airport security, and the jet lag.
Saturday, May 4th is Passport DC’s Around the World tour of local embassies (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). And if you’re wondering why so few European countries are on the list, you’ll find the answer at the May 11th EU Open House (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
The neighborhood embassies hosting open houses on May 4th include Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. The embassies of Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia will be hosting events at UDC. And, you might want to make the UDC Student Center your first stop. The Around the World tour will have a welcome booth out front, and volunteers will be handing out maps and souvenir passports that you can have stamped at each of the participating embassies.
On May 11th, the closest European Union open houses are at the embassies of Austria, Slovakia, the Netherlands (which is sharing its space with Belgium), Hungary and Czechia. This tour will also have an information booth at the UDC Student Center.
What’s a world tour without shopping the local markets for delicacies and trinkets? The Around the World Tour coincides with the second UDC Van Ness farmers market of the season (open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.). The EU Open House falls on the same day as the third Van Ness Main Street Second Saturdays pop-up market (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) The VNMS pop-up features the Carpe Librum used book sale on the sidewalk outside 4340 Connecticut, and as many as eight local makers inside the Van Ness Main Street office.
(Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street.)
Raise a toast to the neighborhood’s boozy history. As well as support Friends of Peirce Mill’s mission. Become a member, and then head to the mill on May 16th for a members-only cider tasting and tour of the mill’s historic orchard.
Hit the trail with Rock Creek Conservancy, for fun. The conservancy calendar has the usual invasive plant removal events throughout the month (including a few in Reservation 630 and behind Politics and Prose). And scattered among them are a few “Spring in the Parks” events. This is all about play: “This event features coloring pages, bubbles, lawn games, and more fun to celebrate the volunteers who are helping to restore Rock Creek.” The May 11th and May 25th events are at Trail 9, where Broad Branch Road meets Beach Drive.
Other neighborhood happenings:
National Capital Astronomers and the National Park Service are hosting their monthly Exploring the Sky gatherings near the Rock Creek Nature Center. Arrive at 9 p.m. on May 4th for a guided tour of some celestial wonders.
May 10th is pajama party movie night at Hillwood Museum.
And Jackson-Reed High School students are performing the musical Cabaret May 16-18 and 23-25. Click each date on our calendar for details and ticket purchase information.
