Meet the Candidates: Sue Guzman, ANC 3F02

October 1, 2024

This week, we are getting to know the candidates for ANC 3F, in each of the single-member districts they might represent for the next two years. Today, ANC 3F02 is in the spotlight.

Like 3F01 on the other side of Connecticut Avenue, ANC 3F02 is almost entirely residential. Its residents live in single family homes and four large apartment buildings. Forest Hills Park and Capital Memorial Church are within its boundaries. (You can learn if you’re also in-boundary by searching your street address at OpenANC.org.)

ANC 3F02

3F02 voters will see Sue Guzman’s name on their ballots. She is running for the first time. Here is her statement:

In the early 2000s, my husband and I wanted to move from our Dupont Circle rowhouse to a single-family home with more space. Many of our friends encouraged us to “move to the suburbs,” especially since we had two young children. But our hearts were in DC and we chose Forest Hills. And we made a good choice. Our home on Davenport Street has been the source of much joy as we expanded our family with two more children and established deep roots in the neighborhood.

Over the years, I have served in many ways – HSA President at Murch Elementary, as well as Secretary of the Local School Advisory Team; small business investor; supporter of Van Ness Main Street; member of the former Friends of Forest Hills Playground organization. I want to continue serving by being ANC 3F02 Commissioner.

One priority of mine is to participate in DC’s affordable housing discussion and shape how the city’s voucher system can be implemented successfully in ANC 3F. I believe city agencies should be held accountable for coordinating the wraparound services needed to truly support all residents, including those with housing vouchers. Local schools need budget flexibility, and the link between equitable housing and public safety should be fully explored. Diversity creates true and meaningful neighborhood vibrancy when all aspects of city government work together cohesively, rather than operating in silos.

Another priority is traffic safety, specifically the effects of closing upper Beach Drive to motor vehicles, causing many streets in ANC 3F02 to become speedy commuting corridors to Connecticut Avenue and beyond. I support all options being explored to enhance pedestrian safety and neighborhood tranquility so best practices can be identified.

Strong advocacy focused on cooperation and community-building is my intention as Commissioner of ANC 3F02. Listening, making connections and working together are my main objectives. These values define all that I do, and are the only way everyone’s voices get heard.

Thank you for your consideration … and your vote!
