Meet the finalists who will develop public art for Van Ness

August 23, 2017 by FHC

This Van Ness DC public art installation is getting some company.

by Theresa Cameron
Executive Director, Van Ness Main Street

The call for artists went out last spring. Now Van Ness Main Street is excited to introduce the three artist teams chosen to design public art for as many as three locations at Van Ness.

  • Charles Bergen Studios, Washington (Brookland)
  • After Architecture partners Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann, Blacksburg, VA
  • Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, Baltimore
  •
A few weeks ago, the Van Ness Main Street Design Committee met to review responses to the Public Art and Wayfinding RFQ (request for qualifications). The three finalists were chosen from eight submissions, which included samples of their previous work, resumes and artist statements.

The finalists will each receive $1,000 to develop a proposal for any or all of these three Van Ness DC sites: Van Ness Street and Connecticut Avenue on the south end, Albemarle and Connecticut on the northern end, and Windom Place in between.

You can meet the artists and provide input they can use in creating their designs on Saturday, September 9th, 10 a.m. to noon at WAMU (4401 Connecticut Avenue). If you are unable to make it, a video will be posted at VanNessMainStreet.org the following week.

A panel will choose the artist/team by the end of October.
