Nearby news: Target to move into Cleveland Park Petco location

November 2, 2017 by FHC

The Washington Business Journal says Target is going to open a small-format store at the Petco location at Sam’s Park & Shop in Cleveland Park.

Since space is limited, small format Targets aim to tailor their selection to the neighborhood’s needs. That can mean kid and baby items in areas with a number of families, and at locations near college campuses, ping pong balls strategically placed by the beer (not kidding).

What kind of product mix would be most useful to this neighborhood? Judging from the many comments on Popville’s post about the WBJ report, it seems like pet supplies and a dog-friendly atmosphere would do much to make up for the loss of Petco at this location.

Here we go again: big corporate boxes play havoc on communities, small businesses and economic diversity.

As Marx said, unchecked ‘capitalism’ has the seeds of its own downfall. With the consolidation of commercial options, folks it ain’t even capitalism that we are witnessing. And, another observation, the petty bourgeois class says nothing. So much for ‘free enterprise’. Can’t wait for WALMART to move into Forest Hills!

Cleveland Park retail has been in decline for years, they are lucky that the small format target wants to go there. Neighborhood is dying, used to be a dynamo and the nimbys killed it.
