Update on the Chinese Embassy explosives incident: “A criminal defense lawyer from Florida pleaded guilty,” The Washington Post writes, “to trying to ignite an explosive device outside the Chinese Embassy.” Christopher Rodriguez’s ignition method was a rifle, which he fired at a backpack containing 15 pounds of explosives. It came out in the court filing accompanying his guilty plea that he had done this before in Texas. No motive has been revealed for either incident.

Just a few of the first responders at the Van Ness-UDC Metro station on July 31st.
Metro doesn’t play with fire. On July 31st, an arcing insulator on the inbound track at Van Ness-UDC led to the temporary closure of that station and Tenleytown’s. It also prompted DC Fire and EMS, MPD and Metro emergency personnel to converge on the area. ABC7 dropped a hint as to why they were preparing for worse: “… the Red Line is prone to arcing insulator problems on the third rail because it’s below the water table and has moisture issues. When moisture builds up on arcing insulators on the third rail it can spark and start fires around the tracks.”
Rising from DCist’s ashes: Six former DCist and WAMU employees are launching a worker-owned and community-informed news outlet called The 51st. “They plan to host community listening sessions and hire freelancers in each of the city’s wards,” reports The Post. They’re also raising money. At this writing they were 78% of the way toward their initial $250,000 fundraising goal. WAMU (headquartered at 4401 Connecticut Avenue) shutdown DCist.com and laid off several reporters, editors and other staffers on February 23rd, six years to the day after the station announced it was acquiring and reviving DCist.
The Van Ness Burger King made an impression. We thought a local news organization or two might link or match our recent article about the “Rock ‘n Roll Burger King” building being put up for sale. Never in a million years did we imagine it would be the U.S. edition of The Sun tabloid.

The Van Ness Burger King was kind of iconic back in the day. (2018 photo)
