A tragic anniversary: One year ago this month, young DeAndre Pettus died at Connecticut House. He was only five years old. At that time, DeAndre’s father was charged with cruelty to children. In July, NBC Washington reports, a grand jury indicted the senior DeAndre Pettus on more charges.
The “gray resistance” in Van Ness and beyond: That’s Washingtonian’s term for the largely older organizers of frequent anti-Trump protests in Northwest DC. Neighbors featured in the story include Peggy McNutt, who at 96 “is actually not the most senior activist who regularly takes part in these protests against the administration. She’s not even the oldest in her building, a midcentury co-op tower near the Metro. (That distinction likely goes to 100-year-old Elly Newman, who organized garment workers in the 1940s and joined the March on Washington in 1963.)”
What not to do on Broad Branch Road: During and after heavy rains, parts of the road can flood within minutes, yet WUSA9 captured footage of drivers pushing through despite the danger.
Making space for theater: For small theater companies, securing rehearsal and performance spaces is a “grueling” endeavor, reports the Washington City Paper. The organizers of last summer’s District Fringe faced the same challenge until ANC 3F Commissioner Adrian Jesus Iglesias and Van ness Main Street’s Gloria Garcia “really put their backs into it and made it happen” at UDC. (Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street.)
The Owl’s Nest is still on the market: The Washington Post’s July 3rd “House of the Week” is a historic home in Forest Hills, located across Gates Road NW from the Capital Memorial Church. And it’s still waiting for its next owner to make an offer. The house was recently relisted at $7,495,000, about a million dollars under the original asking price. What is the Owl’s Nest? Margery Elfin wrote for us in 2012 about the 128-year-old home’s history, its years of deterioration, and its mid-2000s purchase and restoration.
