Neighborhood in the news: Nursing home, pricy home, apartment home

Washington Home residents sue to stay: Residents of the Washington Home sued to block the home’s impending sale to next-door Sidwell Friends under DC’s Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act. A judge calls the strategy “imaginative,” but indicates it’s a stretch. The next hearing on the sale is July 29th.

And sold, for $9.1 million: An Ellicott Street home is the priciest sold in DC so far this year.

A new place to live: 5333 Connecticut is now open to tenants. The first one moved in June 1st. The Cafritz building got a different reception from the neighbors than Saul Centers’ Park Van Ness did.

The Beach will be off-limits after summer ends: The massive rehabilitation of Beach Drive begins after Labor Day. This will entail major reconstruction of the roadway, including bridges, the tunnel and the trail along the roadway. Each phase will require road and trail closures 24/7, causing major traffic disruptions. This will be done in five phases over a period of three years:

Phase 1: Beach Drive between Shoreham Drive and Porter Street.
Phase 2: Beach Drive between Porter Street and Tilden Street/Park Road.
Phase 3: Beach Drive between Tilden Street/Park Road and Broad Branch Road.
Phase 4: Beach Drive between Broad Branch Road and Joyce Road.
Phase 5: Beach Drive between Joyce Road and the National Park Service boundary at the Maryland state line.

Greater Greater Washington goes into more detail on the work happening during each phase.

The National Park Service will keep you posted on upcoming closures through Nixle. You can register by texting BEACHDRIVE to 888777 from your mobile phone or visit nixle.com.
