November in the Neighborhood: Fight hunger with NW Community Food; Hillwood is free for federal workers

October 31, 2025 1 Comment

Volunteer or give to fight hunger. Judith Ingram of NW Community Food writes: “Every weekend, our neighborhood pantry… serves up to 380 families from our quarters at the back of 4340 Connecticut Avenue (UDC’s David A. Clarke Law School building), and we expect that number to swell.” The pantry is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays to receive donations of packaged foods, cleaning supplies and personal care items. Sundays, between 1 and 3 p.m., are distribution days.

Hillwood is free for federal workers. Bring your government work ID to the museum and gardens for free admission during the shutdown.

Prevent weeds from attempting another Brandywine Street sidewalk takeover. Also on the 8th, volunteers will be clearing invasive plants from the hillside alongside the Forest Hills Park baseball field. Sign up here.

Everybody sing. Sunday, November 9th, Levine Music is scheduled to host a campfire sing-along in Rock Creek Park’s Picnic Grove #1 (across Tilden Street from Peirce Mill).

UDC jazzes up Thanksgiving. Take a break on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 25th for a Thankgiving celebration concert featuring the UDC small jazz ensembles. The free concert begins at 2 p.m. and will be held in the Performing Arts recital hall (Building 46W, Room A04).

Deal Middle School’s winter market begins. The annual Christmas tree, wreath and garland sale is a two-weekend affair, beginning November 29th and 30th and continuing on December 6th and 7th. The start and end times are TBA.

Very organized volunteers receiving food and other donations today in the alley behind the law school. They told us we could also deliver donations on Sunday. They said the best time for Sunday drop-offs is before 11 a.m.
