Photos: A winter (but sometimes less-than-wondrous) wonderland

I’m recovering from a knee injury. But on Tuesday, the sunny skies and fresh snow beckoned me.

After removing snow from my yard trees and bushes, and getting many snow showers in the process, I headed out into the neighborhood to take photos. 30th Street (below) provided a passable place to walk.

Brandywine Street, from 30th looking east toward the park, looked even better.

At Forest Hills Playground, a single child played.

But a small hill near the Forest Hills Park amphitheater was seeing lots of action.

Next stop, Connecticut Avenue. The Brandywine and the Avalon Apartments on the east side had their sidewalks mostly cleared by late Tuesday afternoon.

The avenue itself was mostly clear, too. But the intersection with Albemarle Street was a mess.

And on the other side of Albemarle, the sidewalk was covered in ice. (It was cleared by Wednesday morning.)

I turned around and headed north on Connecticut to Fessenden Street.

Then east to Broad Branch Terrace.

And onto the Linnean Park trail.

Back on Connecticut, I ran into Mitch Baer, the Soapstone Valley trail supervisor for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. He has been leading efforts to improve the Linnean trail, and he joined me on this walkthrough.

We continued on to Broad Branch stream, and saw several families at the Carnegie Institution for Science, a popular sledding destination.

And then, we saw Broad Branch Stream in its winter finery.
