Plan your Saturday: Forage at the reopened UDC farmers market; Remove an invasive plant (and maybe eat it too)

April 29, 2022 by FHC Leave a Comment

The weather forecast for the last day of April looks sunny and lovely. We have a couple of ideas for getting out in the neighborhood to enjoy it.

John Burwell, one of the official caretakers of the rehabbed Linnean Stream, is a certified Weed Warrior who is leading a volunteer group removing invasive garlic mustard at the daylighted Broad Branch Stream. Register here to help out from 10 a.m. to noon.

One of the volunteers who helped out a year ago made garlic mustard pesto out of one of the recipes he shared with the group. She served it with oxtail pasta from Uptown Market and spinach and cherry tomatoes from the UDC Van Ness farmers market.

Which brings us to our next suggestion:

The UDC Van Ness farmers market is opening for the season at the UDC Student Center. Note the new hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Most of last year’s vendors are returning, and there are ten new ones.

Brunch, lunch or dinner al fresco at one of the Connecticut Avenue restaurants also sounds lovely, as does a visit to the historic Peirce Mill and the gardens of the Hillwood Estate.

Forest Hills Connection is produced by volunteers, and supported by you. We appreciate your support – financial and otherwise. Here’s how to donate.
