Potential Park Van Ness Sidewalk Solutions

November 21, 2013 by FHC

by Marlene Berlin

After reading comments about the sidewalk closure at 4455 Connecticut Avenue and thinking about the situation a bit more, this is what I recommend when the sidewalk closes again:

  • Covered walkway for pedestrians similar to what is at UDC (Councilmember Mary Cheh has proposed this)
  • Lane of Connecticut Avenue closed off when covered walkway cannot be used due to garage construction
  • Yuma Street crosswalks blocked with barriers and signs.
  •
DDOT and Saul Centers should put these recommendations into effect for the sake of pedestrians, young and old, who shop here, dine here, go to school here, and need to travel to and from the Van Ness Metro station.

And speaking of the Metro, the closed eastern entrance will reopen in five months and make this an even more dangerous situation when the Park Van Ness sidewalk is closed again.

Bravo! A few hundred feet of one lane of Connecticut Avenue are not sacrosanct. Human lives are.

Something else we might ask DCDOT for is a longer light at Veazey Terrace for those on that street who are trying to get out onto Connecticut Avenue. With all Metro riders now forced to exit onto the west side of Connecticut, drivers face a tide of pedestrians at the crosswalk, and especially during rush hour, it’s almost impossible to make the turn onto Connecticut before the light changes. Just a temporary fix until the Metro escalators on the east are back in action.
