We know the community is eager to welcome MOM’s Organic Market to the neighborhood. We might be doing so this summer.
On May 15th, I spoke to a worker who was installing glass at the entrance. He told me a lot is done – the bathrooms and refrigerator cases included. His estimate is that within two months, MOM’s will open. He also told me that they are working on a store in Silver Spring at the same time.
We’ve asked MOM’s for an update. Stay tuned.
I also saw action at Rosedale, the Ashok Bajaj restaurant opening at the former Soapstone Market and Uptown Market location at Park Van Ness. Two doors were open, and workers were inside, banging away.
It’s likely MOM’s and Rosedale will arrive sooner than another new business opening in Van Ness. We reported last year that Dog Haus is opening a location at 4340 Connecticut. The Dog Haus team recently told Popville it’s targeting a late 2024-early 2025 opening.

Good news about Mom’s market and the restaurants but it is amazing how long this takes – several years in some cases.

It’s amazing but not unexpected. A decade ago, Bread Furst’s Mark Furstenberg gave us a window into the ins and outs and ups and downs of building out a new store, which opened weeks later than expected. And that was before the supply chains turned upside down in the pandemic. So much remains out of their control even now.

The space next to Giant is being advertised as for lease. Unfortunately the ad is right below “Ernesto’s” on the building facade and it can create the impression that Ernesto’s is gone, especially when driving by.
Ernesto’s is a great, long time family business in Van Ness that provides great haircuts for women and men at a reasonable price. Please continue to support this great local small business!

I’d like to see the owner of the building that houses Go-Puff, former Laliguras, nail salon, etc. invest resources in that building. Create a more attractive facade, add apartments on top, for ex. The Van Ness to Veazy block on the east side of Conn. is kind of an eyesore, except for the nicely maintained landscaping at the UDC building at Veazy; that building appears lifeless most of the time. The building at 4201 Connecticut is nicely maintained but the empty first floor windows are disheartening.
