Before the DC primary election in June and the general election in November, voters in one of ANC 3F’s six single-member districts could have the opportunity to elect a new commissioner.
The previous ANC 3F05 commissioner, James Tandaric, resigned at the end of February, and the DC Board of Elections has certified the vacancy. That act sets the ANC special election process in motion.
Candidates who live within 3F05’s boundaries can pick up nominating petitions (by email, mail or in person) and collect signatures of 3F05 voters starting Monday, March 18th. The petitions must be turned in (by the same means) by 4:45 p.m. on Monday, April 8th. That will be followed by the petition challenge period, from April 11th through the 18th.
If all the signatures check out, and if you’re the only candidate who filed a petition, you will automatically become the next 3F05 commissioner. If there is more than one candidate, ANC 3F and the Office of the ANC will hold a special election. The seat must be filled by June 15th or the process begins again.
Here’s a two-page PDF with everything you need to know about running for mid-term vacancies.
The winning candidate will serve the remainder of the 2023-2024 term. And it won’t be long before everyone interested in serving on an ANC will be invited to go through a similar petition process. We’ll be electing candidates to new two-year terms on Election Day.
The five remaining ANC 3F commissioners are meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19th. Here’s the agenda:
