We’re excited about this year’s Forest Hills Holiday Bazaar because of the incredible artists and craftspeople who are selling their wares (check out the full list here), and also because we’ve lined up an amazing array of local experiences for a silent auction: Tours of artist studios, opportunities to be the artist, personal tours of local treasures Peirce Mill and Broad Branch Stream, and a wine tasting for you and up to nine of your friends.
Ten percent of the proceeds from most sales at the bazaar will be donated to Forest Hills Connection, and 100 percent of the silent auction proceeds will go toward our work covering the neighborhood news and telling you all about the fascinating people who live and work here – including the people who have donated their time and expertise for these silent auction items:
Tour Broad Branch Stream With Steve Saari
Steve Saari, who managed the Broad Branch Stream restoration project for the DC Department of the Energy and Environment, will lead a tour of Broad Branch Stream at Nevada and Linnean Avenues to discuss the history of the stream, the project, what wildlife has already returned and what is expected in the future. Tour available March through May. Value: $150. Starting Bid: $75.
Two Pottery Lessons From Rosalia Gutierrez-Huete
Rosalia Gutierrez-Huete, a well-known ceramicist and artist, offers to four individuals a talk about the history of ceramics, glazes and firing clay, including a demonstration with the experience of throwing one pot on the wheel (two hours) and a second lesson on glazing your pot (about one hour), to pick up two weeks later. Tour Peirce Mill With Adam Sieminski
Although Peirce Mill visits are free of charge to all, this specially-organized tour for up to ten people will be hosted by Adam Sieminski, Forest Hills resident, former president of Friends of Peirce Mill, civil engineer and trained miller. Setsuko Ono Studio Tour
Setsuko Ono will lead a tour for up to six people of her studio and sculpture garden which will include her most recent painting Migrants and her sculpture Wind. Date and time to be determined. Value: $160. Starting bid: $80.
Washington Photo Safari Gift Certificate
E. David Luria, an architectural landmark photographer who founded Washington Photo Safari 18 years ago and has been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence since 2014, offers a gift certificate to two people for an afternoon of photographing monuments and memorials. Value $89. Starting bid: $45.
Robin Rose House Tour and Dinner for Four
Robin Rose will lead a tour of his house featuring art (including his paintings) and furniture of the 50’s. In addition, his wife Judy and daughter Hannah Rose, both accomplished chefs, will prepare and host a dinner of an international cuisine (vegetarian option available) including wine. This is offered for the evening of February 24 or 25. Cuisine, specific day and time to be determined. Value: $400. Starting bid: $150.
Joan Danziger House and Studio Tour
Joan Danziger will lead a tour of 6 to 8 individuals of her house and studio and introduce you to her new sculptures, glass of horses. Weather permitting, she will show her outdoor sculpture. Date and time to be determined. Value: $160. Starting bid: $80.
Wine Tasting for 10 at Via Umbria
Suzy and Bill Menard, neighbors in Forest Hills and owners of Via Umbria in Georgetown, are offering a wine tasting for 10 people in their Via Umbria wine room. Four to five wines will be presented by a sommelier and tasted along with appetizer pairings. Value: $359. Starting bid: $150.
