Serving our neighborhood in 2019: Who’s who at ANC 3F and Van Ness Main Street

January 11, 2019 by FHC Leave a Comment

The new year brings changes to neighborhood organizations ANC 3F and Van Ness Main Street.

On the ANC

The 2019-2020 ANC 3F term begins with three new faces, and without ANC 3F’s chair of 15 months. Pat Jakopchek moved out of the neighborhood in December and was required to resign his office.

Here are our commissioners:

ANC 3F01 – David Dickinson (incumbent)
ANC 3F02 – Carolinn Kuebler
ANC 3F03 – Naomi Rutenberg (incumbent)
ANC 3F04 – Leah Frelinghuysen
ANC 3F05 – Andrea Molod (incumbent)
ANC 3F06 – Monika Nemeth
ANC 3F07 – Vacant

The DC Board of Elections is currently accepting candidate petitions for 3F07, the seat vacated by Jakopchek.

ANC 3F07

If you live within the boundaries of the single-member district and would like to run, you go in person to the Board of Elections (441 4th Street Northwest, room 250N) to pick up a nominating petition and then return it with the signatures of 25 other registered voters within 3F07 by close of business in Monday, January 28th. If two or more candidates do so, the ANC will hold a special election at its March 19th meeting. If only one candidate completes this process, he or she will automatically fill the seat.

David Dickinson first won his seat, 3F01, in a special election. His advice? “Reach out to current or prior commissioners and think how public service allows getting to know community and neighbors.” Potential candidates can contact him at dickinsonanc3f@gmail.com.

Van Ness Main Street

At the March 2016 Van Ness Main Street kickoff party. (L-R) then-VNMS board members Benae Mosby, Eun Yim, Sally Gresham, Chuck Schilke, DC Council member Mary Cheh, Uzi Turker, Mary Beth Ray, Gary Malasky, Ken Terzian, VNMS executive director Theresa Cameron, Marlene Berlin.

Three of the four departing Van Ness Main Street board members have been there since the beginning. Mary Beth Ray led ANC 3F’s Van Ness Vision Committee, which morphed into Van Ness Main Street, then served as VNMS president until the end of 2017. Marlene Berlin was the 2018 president. Sally Gresham, another former ANC commissioner and co-founder, co-chaired the VNMS Design Committee until the end of 2017. Gary Malasky, the chair of the Economic Development Committee, has also resigned.

The new president and chair of the board is Sarah Cumbie, who joined the Van Ness Main Street board at the beginning of 2017. Barbara Lardy, who has been a member of the Events Committee, has joined the board and is vice president. Zach Friedlis, another founding member, is now secretary and Pat Jakopchek, who is remaining on the board, is its new Treasurer. Michael Sands of Calvert Woodley and Sandi Stewart, a member of the Organization Committee, have joined as new board members.

Theresa Cameron, the executive director of Van Ness Main Street, will continue on and will be critical to a smooth transition. Continuing members of the board are the following:

  • Pat Davies, chair of the Events Committee
  • Matt Dreher, chair of the Design Committee
  • Chuck Schilke
  • Reginald Felton
  • Uzay Turker
  • Fred Underwood
