On Sunday, a friend and I were walking up Broad Branch Road, close to the Soapstone trailhead, when we saw a large bird flying across the sky and swooping down onto a tree. My first thought? That it could be an owl, but my friend exclaimed that it was a bald eagle.
Sure enough, it was. The eagle lingered in the tree for a few minutes. Teri Huet and I attempted some photos, and she captured it on video as it flew away.
It was enthralling and also hard to believe that I was actually seeing a bald eagle. I was also frustrated that I could not zoom in for a clear shot. The eagle was too high in the tree and blended in so perfectly with the tree branches that it was hard to find with a camera lens.
Luckily, we have neighbors who are handier with a camera, and with the luck and skill to capture bald eagles in flight. Diane Krauthamer photographed this beauty on Sunday in Rock Creek Park.

So keep your eyes peeled on your walks in the park. You, too, might be treated to this sight.

Must be a lot more than usual rabbits, baby deer, baby foxes and other small mammals in the Park, because there are not enough fish in Rock Creek to support even one bald eagle, let alone more than one.

How wonderful to see this post since we couldn’t believe our eyes when we recently saw what we were quite sure was an eagle, but in our neighborhood? Great documentation of something we didn’t anticipate seeing.

Several of us who walk in Rock Creek Park every morning have been marveling at the awesome sight of this glorious creature. I like to believe this magnificent bald eagle was providing protection when our community experienced the shock of the Van Ness shooting on Friday. With all that fire power, so little carnage = a miracle. Thank you, beautiful eagle!!
