Due May 11: Tell Metro what you think of proposed L1 and L2 bus route changes

May 4, 2018 by FHC

Metro is proposing changes to the L1 and L2 bus lines that run up and down Connecticut Avenue and it is seeking feedback on those changes.

These are the proposals:

Proposal A: Convert all Route L1 buses to Route L2 buses. All buses between Chevy Chase Circle and Farragut Square would run along the L2 route in order to simplify service options and increase weekday frequency between Chevy Chase Circle and Farragut Square. (Metro doesn’t specify but it would seem the L1 route would be eliminated.)

Proposal B: On weekends only, terminate every other Route L2 trip at Woodley Park. Between Chevy Chase Circle to Woodley Park, buses would run every 20 minutes instead of every 30 minutes, BUT between Woodley Park and Farragut Square, buses would run every 60 minutes instead of every 30 minutes.

Proposal C: Consolidate bus stops that have low levels of use and are close to other stops to improve travel speeds. See Map of Proposed Bus Stops for Consolidation.

Some of the L1 and L2 bus stops that would be eliminated under Metro’s plan. Click the image to view the full-sized version with all the affected stops.

Metro is also proposing changes to the 42 and 43 lines. Find more information on these and the L2 changes, and links to the surveys here.

L-1 provides a convenient rush hour link directly to GW U & Medical facilities. Years ago it was a true express, not picking up past Porter Street S. bound & Conn & K N. bound. No debarkation before Porter, N. Bound & Florida (?) S. bound.

If METRO really wanted to improve service on Conn. Ave, they would institute a 10 min shuttle bus between Van Ness & Chevy Chase Circle.

Since the demise of the L-4, service on Conn Ave has become unpredictable. I don’t know how commuters can rely on it. Eliminating every other L-2 beyond Woodley Park would make it virtually impossible to ride north of Van Ness Sta. as L-2 is already often 40 minutes apart!

The L1 provides one of the few services on the lower part of Foggy Bottom and Potomac Park where there is no metrorail. The current route gets tortuous around Dupont Circle especially in the evening rush hour so maybe find a way of avoiding all the small easily gridlocked streets there and keep the bus to the wider avenues. Less stops in the congested parts around Dupont area would take 20 minutes off the route.
