Good news: The “secret” park at 36th and Yuma Streets has not been forgotten. And soon, it won’t be allowed deteriorate any more.
Last month, Margery Elfin gave us a tour of this park and showed us the crumbling flagstones and retaining walls. She’s been concerned about the condition of the park for some time.
Forest Hills Connection set about finding the agency responsible for maintaining the park, and thanks to this article, we now know. The U.S. Department of State confirms that it manages the property, which is adjacent to the International Chancery Center (ICC).
Even better, the State Department’s Office of Real Property Management assures us this park is scheduled to be upgraded and repaired by this fall, as are all of ICC’s public spaces.
By the way, this “secret” park has a name: North West Park. And now the secret is out.

Yes, it is a great park. We take our dogs in their quite often and they have amazing flower plantings in spring.
I was in touch with the State Department about the sad state of some of the stone as well. Otherwise, they do maintain the park quite well though.

lovely park, but i avoid it since being attacked by an off-leash shepherd one sunday morning. the owner was at the far end of the park with his other, less deadly dog (also off-leash) and didn’t come to call his dog off for nearly a minute. while i was suggesting he leash the dogs, the small one took the opportunity to bite me on the leg.
so if you’re enjoying the park with your dogs, please be aware that others might wish to use the park as well, and keep them under control!
