We received an update from New Morning Farm on March 19th. It is planning a pilot “pop up” food delivery for Saturday, April 4th, and if successful, they will do it again on the 18th. Visit www.newmorningfarm.net or call 814-599-2777 to order a box of farm-fresh produce, eggs, and baked goods, which you can then pick up at Sheridan School. And, New Morning Farm says, “You can finish the whole transaction without having to get closer than ten feet from our delivery person! Hope you’ll try it!”
It’s almost time for this local farmers market to perform its annual disappearing act.
All winter long, New Morning Farm has been selling root vegetables and winter squash along with “tunnel”-grown greens. (Here’s a lasagna recipe from the farm that makes good use of both.) New Morning Market’s last winter market is Saturday, March 14th. When the market reappears in June, it will return with warm weather crops like berries and peppers.
“Most people don’t understand [the hiatus],” Jim Crawford, the owner and founder of New Morning Farm told Forest Hills Connection in 2012. “They think that because the weather is warm, new crops should be ready. They don’t understand the time and effort that goes into making quality crops.”
The June return is not set in stone. New Morning Farm Market occasionally reopens as early as May. Much depends on growing conditions and availability.
The New Morning Farm Market is held Saturdays at Sheridan School (36th Street and Alton Place). Its December-March hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Its June-November hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
