Howard University is not the only historically Black university in town.
That was the University of the District of Columbia’s message to the more than 500 incoming Howard University students who suddenly found themselves unenrolled last month.
UDC was one of several university systems offering to take in those students. It also extended its enrollment deadline to August 7.
“We understand that college plans can change unexpectedly, and we want students to know that they still have options,” Hasanna Tyus, UDC’ vice president of Enrollment Services, said in a statement.
Tyus doesn’t mention Howard in the statement, but UDC’s social media posts are more direct.
UDC’s president marks his 3rd anniversary
August 1, 2023 was Maurice Edington’s first day as the president of the University of the District of Columbia.
In a June 2023 statement released after his unanimous selection by the UDC Board of Trustees, Edington said, “My vision is that UDC will be recognized as a leading HBCU, a first-choice institution for students, a top destination for employers and funding agencies, and an economic driver for the district and surrounding areas.”
And in a statement reflecting on the past three years, Edington said, “Together, we have launched a bold five-year strategic plan, restored enrollment growth, strengthened student success, expanded academic opportunities and elevated the university’s national profile.”

If you are UDC neighbor with questions, concerns or are simply curious about what’s happening on the Van Ness campus, consider joining the university’s Community-Campus Task Force.
As its name suggests, the task force is made up of people from the campus community and the surrounding neighborhood. And now, it’s welcoming new members.
Juanita Gray, UDC’s director of community engagement, is hosting an informational meeting August 13 at 6:30 p.m. You can connect on Webex, and if you have questions about the task force that may require some time or research to answer, you can submit them here by Aug. 9.
Gray writes:
In compliance with DC Zoning conditions for the 2020 Campus Master Plan, the task force will consist of university officials and community members (ANC 3F, residents of the surrounding Van Ness and North Cleveland Park neighborhoods, including residents of both the single-family neighborhoods and high-rise buildings near campus, and one member of the UDC Garden Club).
The Task Force meets quarterly to encourage dialogue regarding campus planning, student conduct, traffic and parking, construction activity, and similar topics.
Community members who are not members of the task force are also welcome to join the meetings.
